What are Invisalign aligners made of?
Invisalign aligners are made of clear, strong medical grade plastic. Aligners are NOT made of Bisphenol-A (BPA). Several custom aligners are made of different thicknesses over a period of time to achieve the desired final result.
What do "aligners" look like?
The virtually clear trays (or aligners as they are called) allow the patient to take the appliance out of the mouth to eat, brush and floss their teeth. The clear aligners look like whitening trays, are mostly inconspicuous and are a great way to improve your smile.
How often will I have to wear my aligners?
The length of treatment is based on a case to case evaluation. Treatment time can differ for a period of five months to two years depending on the severity of the problem, the desired outcome and patient compliance. Remember that Invisalign only works if you wear it!
Is this a new way to straighten teeth?
Invisalign is more convenient than traditional braces and prevents the need to tighten wires, repair broken wires and deal with the irritation of the sharp metal edges on lips and tongue. While braces are still an effective treatment to move teeth, Invisalign, with all of its advantages and the comfort that comes with it, normally is the treatment of choice if possible. Invisalign also has been shown to help periodontal gum health.
Can I go to any dentist to be treated with Invisalign?
Many general dentists are qualified to provide patients with Invisalign treatment. After an initial consultation, a dentist can determine if the patient is a good candidate for Invisalign or if the patient needs to be referred to an orthodontist.
How will Invisalign effectively move my teeth?
Traditional braces use brackets and wires to move teeth. Invisalign move teeth through controlled forces in many directions. The difference is that with Invisalign a dentist can control the timing of the force application week by week. At each stage, only certain teeth are allowed to move, and these movements are determined by the treatment plan and desired outcome.
