An Interview With Dr. Burke, A Qualified Dentist In Allentown

What are the primary benefits of Invisalign?

Anyone who has had traditional braces in the past can tell you that they fall short in both comfort and appearance. Unfortunately that s hard to get around, because in many cases they are used for cases involving complex tooth movements and bite changes in the back teeth. Invisalign, on the other hand is mainly used for cosmetic tooth movements, often limited to the front. Because of this, more gentle pressure can be used, and the aligners don t require the strength and endurance of traditional treatment. What does this mean to you? First, there s no metal or ceramic brackets, just a thin clear shell, which means even at close range- they re almost invisible. Second, the lack of brackets means that the sore lips and gums you normally associate with Orthodontics, because the aligners are thin and smooth. Next ¦ they re REMOVABLE! They are taken out during meals, thus eliminating the hassle of food getting stuck, especially in public. This also makes it easier for you to brush and floss normally. Additionally, since your appointments are only every four to six weeks, you don t have to find places in your schedule for constant appointments. If you have been thinking about Orthodontic treatment, ask your dentist if Invisalign might work for you.

How does Invisalign work?

A computer software program (ClinCheck) is used to determine where your teeth are now, where they need to be, and how to get there. The program creates step-by-step changes, each one causing a slight movement of a fraction of a millimeter, creating slow incremental changes in tooth position. Using the molds of your teeth, plastic aligners (thin clear shells which cover your teeth) are made, one for each of the incremental changes calculated by the program.

What is Invisalign?

Invisalign is a method of Orthodontic treatment which uses individual custom made aligners to gently move your teeth into position, giving you the smile you have always wanted. It is not a replacement for traditionalbrackets & wires , but in many cases can be used to cosmetically improve your smile. Once your Invisalign certified dentist has determined that your case is appropriate for treatment, records will be taken which include any necessary x-rays, photographs and impressions (molds) of your teeth. These are sent to the Invisalign laboratory, where the clear thin plastic aligners are fabricated from your impressions. In a few weeks you will see your dentist again for delivery of the aligners.
